I compete in Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenges (EMM). EMMs partner a wild, untouched American Mustang with a trainer for 100 days and then they compete for awards. These horses are gathered from the range by the BLM (Bureau of Land Management). There are more Mustangs running wild than the BLM feels the land can handle, so they gather a select number of these wild horses and adopt them out to the public. There are a surplus of horses in need of adoption and that is where the Extreme Mustang Makeover Challenge have come in to help.
Changes to Wild horse’s diet lead to gastric ulcers
I knew that with the history these Mustangs have, they were bound to show signs of ulcers when the trainers first get them. I live in eastern North Carolina, some of the wild Mustangs I have, have come from as far as Reno, NV. That is almost the width of the entire US. Between the stresses of being gathered to the stress of hauling that far, symptoms of gastric ulcers in horses is very common.
I treat my Mustangs for equine gastric ulcers as soon as I have them eating feed. I also feed a great, low starch, forage based feed and that is an imperative part of your program to keep gastric ulcers away, but if a horse has existing ulcers, a good feeding program alone is not enough – at least not in 100 days and that is part of the extreme mustang makeover challenge.
Enteric coated Omeprazole is best
The way I first heard about the Abler Equine products was from a good friend that does body work on high end Dressage and Event horses. He highly recommended it and said all the big barns he went to were swearing by it so I gave it a try. I had used straight Omeprazole in the past, but it does not take much research to realize that does not work well with a horse with existing ulcers. It is broken down in the stomach before the drug has time to do its job. Thankfully, Abprazole™ granules are enteric coated—the granules remain stable in the stomach, allowing them to reach the small intestine to dissolve for proper absorption. I had found no other Omeprazole product in the States that were enteric coated for better absorption other than the one we all know about (because it works, but it so expensive!) -So I was thrilled to try the blue pop rocks for horses. At first I was a bit leery of buying equine medication outside of the US, but I had such respect for the friend that recommended it – I went for it and I could not be more pleased.
Abprazole …It WORKS
I used it on my Mustang gelding, Silver Lining, in 2012 and it helped us win Reserve Champion and $20,000 with a bareback, bridle less freestyle at 100 days from the ‘wild’ extreme mustang makeover challenge. It was a ride I’ll never forget and I know it could not have happened without the help of Abler Equine products.
I am currently headed to a new competition in October. on a new wild Mustang and I am thankful to have him on Abprazole™ as well. I will continue to use it on all of my Mustangs that face the 100 Day extreme mustang makeover and I am thankful such a great product exists!
