Facts about Stomach Ulcers – Horses:
Horses are naturally continual grazers having free access to light grazing. To digest this constant intake of feed, they routinely produce about 1.5 liters of gastric acid per hour.
Horses, those that are being stabled or fed with concentrated or restricted diets, continues to produce acid resulting in an abnormally high acidity in the stomach even when there is no feed intake. Prolonged exposure of the stomach lining to this high acidity condition results in gastric ulcers.
Equine ulcers risk factors that have been found to induce ulcers include some stress related situations like intensive exercise, injury, transport or even psychological stress. The use of some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (Bute) medications can also induce ulcer horse problems.
Research has shown that ulcers are more prevalent than most owners realize.
Clinical symptoms of Ulcers – Horses:
Whilst an internal examination using an equine gastroscope is the only certain way to diagnose EGUS, there are many symptoms that are indicative of gastric ulcers:
– Decreased appetite – reluctance to eat the concentrated part of their diet
o Loss of weight
o Loss of condition
o Poor hair coat
– Attitude changes
o Aggressive or nervous disposition
o Grinding teeth
o Excessive salivation
o Lying down
o Hunched standing position
Treatment of Ulcers – Horses:
Equine ulcers are diagnosed with gastroscopic examination. But in the absence of a gastroscopic examination, successful treatment of the symptoms usually confirms the presence of ulcers.
The most successful treatment regime today is the use of Omeprazole. Omeprazole in not an antacid. It decreases the gastric acid secretion by blocking the H+, K+ – adenosine triphosphatase (acid pump) enzymes, thus shutting down acid secretion by knocking out the acid pumps – as opposed to competing with the stimulant.
Omeprazole is known to be acid-labile and is degraded under acid conditions in the stomach. In order to be effective, the Omeprazole must reach the intestine intact and needs protection from the acid environment, so we made use of unique technology to enteric coat the Omeprazole granules.
Abprazole Plus™ granules are enteric coated which protects the granules from the stomach acid, thus assuring that your horse gets effectively treated with the Omeprazole.
The loss of appetite and selective eating both create atypical conditions with the intestinal flora, possibly allowing the development of pathogenic bacteria and hindering the effective absorption of fatty acids and other nutrients.
Abprazole Plus™ combines Omeprazole granules with a propriety Probiotic DNA hybridization spore culture (ATCC-31284™) with potency guaranteed within the stated shelf life period which aids in the fast recovery of your horse.
So, get your horse treated now with Abprazole Plus™ – the ALL in ONE equine ulcer treatment that’s affordable for your pocket!
